Neurodivergence and Differentiation Tip 6: Change the Presentation Format
As a neurodivergent teacher, I understand the importance of differentiation in the classroom. One effective strategy is to change the presentation format of the information we deliver. This can significantly enhance the way pupils process and understand the material. In this blog, I will discuss various tools and techniques that can be used to achieve this.
Utilising Technology
Smart boards, tablets, and Chromebooks are excellent tools for changing the presentation format. These technologies allow us to present information in a more interactive and engaging manner. For example, smart boards can be used to display dynamic content, while tablets and Chromebooks can provide personalised learning experiences for each student.
Creating Graphics
Graphics are a powerful way to convey information. Software such as Communication in Print 3 or even PowerPoint can be used to create visually appealing graphics. Social media is full of graphics because they are effective in capturing attention and conveying messages. Many graphics can be purchased or borrowed, but creating them yourself allows you to tailor them to the specific needs of your students.
Considering Sensory Needs
When creating graphics, it is important to consider the sensory needs of your students. For example, learners with visual impairments or dyslexia may require specific formats to process information effectively. As someone who is dyslexic, I use the Dyslexie font, white on black, in font size 14. This format is unlikely to cause visual disturbances for students with visual impairments and is not jarring or harmful for neurotypical peers.
Choosing the Right Font and Background
Sophia, our ‘learner in mind,’ prefers clear texts, so the Dyslexie font works well for her. If you are unsure about which font style or background to use, you can always start with the Dyslexie font. It is perfectly acceptable to use as your standard font and can be a good starting point for creating accessible content. You can find the font using this link https://dyslexiefont.com/en/
By changing the presentation format and considering the sensory needs of your students, you can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment. Remember, differentiation is key to ensuring that all students can access and engage with the material.
