Neurodivergence and Differentiation Tip 7: Change the Production Format

As a neurodivergent (ND) learner myself, one thing I have hugely  grateful for, was when a Twitter acquaintance took half an hour out of their day to explain accessibility tools to me. At the age of 45, I finally found ways to make the world of literacy come alive. I should point out that I already had a degree, PGCE, and a master’s degree, as well as 21 years of teaching experience by then, but I did not enjoy reading or writing. I’ve written some of this using voice-to-text technology, and I’ll use text-to-voice to proof read it.

Embracing Technology in Education

Even examination boards allow the use of reading pens and scribing technology within certain guidelines. This is great because you could teach Sophia, our learner in mind, to use these tools in class from Year 7. By the time she gets to GCSE, these will be well established as her ‘normal way of working’. As you can tell, I’m very keen on using technology. I know of and use many different applications and programs with my learners, and I could talk about them for hours, but I risk going dangerously off topic, so I’ll save that for another blog.

The Impact of Accessibility Tools

The introduction of accessibility tools has had a profound impact on my teaching and learning experience. These tools have not only made literacy more accessible but have also empowered me to explore new ways of engaging with content. For instance, voice-to-text technology has allowed me to express my thoughts more freely, while text-to-voice has been invaluable for proofreading and ensuring accuracy.

Preparing Students for the Future

By integrating these tools into our teaching practices, we can better prepare our students for the future. Technology is constantly evolving, and it is essential that we equip our learners with the skills they need to navigate this ever-changing landscape. Encouraging the use of accessibility tools from an early age will help students like Sophia develop confidence and independence in their learning journey.

Conclusion

In conclusion, changing the production format and embracing technology in education can significantly enhance the learning experience for ND learners. By leveraging accessibility tools, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that caters to the diverse needs of our students. As educators, it is our responsibility to stay informed about the latest advancements in technology and to incorporate these tools into our teaching practices to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to succeed.

By changing the presentation format and considering the sensory needs of your students, you can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment. Remember, differentiation is key to ensuring that all students can access and engage with the material.
